The grandmother realized the frustration caused by being dependent upon others for education and decided to become independent by learning to read. With her strong willpower and determination in place, she was successful in accomplishing her mission.

1. Read the story aloud to her.

When the magazine Karmaveera arrived every Wednesday afternoon, Grandmother would request her twelve-year-old granddaughter read it aloud. With great enthusiasm and pleasure, she did so happily and eagerly – listening with excellent concentration to the story of an old woman going to Kashi, which resonated deeply with her own experience of not attending school herself and always making sure her children and grandchildren studied well. Grandmother regretted never treating herself, so she always made sure her children and grandchildren looked hard despite this oversight in her education journey.

One day, a grandmother decided to learn to read herself rather than depend on her granddaughter to do it for her. At sixty-two, she made this decision, sparking laughter from everyone, but she determined not to let anything stop her from learning the language herself. Starting tuitions with her and doing incredible homework, she set Saraswati Pooja day during Dassara as her deadline and was amazed to witness such perseverance on her part to learn this language – leaving everyone stunned and impressed at the grandmother’s willpower to study alone. The narrator was amazed at such determination on behalf of both grandmother and granddaughter in order to do it themselves!

When the narrator returns from her village, she finds her grandmother crying and asks what has caused it. Her grandmother explained how upset she had been over having not attended school as planned. The grandmother informed the student of how vital an education was and that now she wished to become independent. Additionally, the grandmother shared that she had an excellent teacher who provided excellent tuition. The grandmother stroked the narrator’s feet affectionately and told her that teachers must be respected regardless of gender and age. The narrator was shocked, wondering why her grandmother could touch them so intimately in public; her grandmother explained it was a sign of respect and love and said she would read Kashi Yatra to her every night.

2. Repeat the words aloud.

Although she had no education, the grandmother was determined to learn. Believing that age shouldn’t stand in her way, she began taking tuition from her granddaughter and worked hard. Over time, she made significant strides toward mastery of reading the Kannada alphabet.

One day, she found herself feeling regretful that she had never attended school during her childhood. One day, she received the magazine Karmaveera and opened it to look at all its pictures without being able to read any words, feeling both dependent and helpless at once.

The grandmother determined that she would learn to read so she could become independent, enrolling herself in a tuition class and working hard. Over time, she became self-sufficient with reading; singing songs to herself helped her remember words while showing respect by touching the feet of her teacher in a show of concern as it felt necessary.

3. Write the words aloud.

The grandmother was an illiterate individual who lamented her lack of education. One day, while alone, she came across a magazine named Karmaveera but could not understand any of it, which caused her to feel dependent and helpless.

She decided to fulfill her desire to learn to read. She worked tirelessly in pursuit of this goal, believing that when determined for a worthy purpose, they can overcome any hurdles on their way. Age was no barrier either – she took tutoring sessions with an established writer.

At first, the writer was taken aback by her grandmother’s behavior and thought she had broken tradition by touching elders’ feet. But her grandmother explained it was done out of respect for her teacher as it is written in their scriptures that teachers must be respected regardless of gender and age.

This grandmother worked very hard each day to practice reading and writing. She would first perform the ‘Saraswati Pooja’ and then begin reading from Kashi Yatre’s novel on her own; soon, she realized her goal of reading the novel solo. Her determination paid off; soon enough, she was reading independently! This bright and intelligent woman should be respected. Furthermore, she taught her grandchildren the value of kindness and helpfulness, which was very inspiring indeed! This story makes for fascinating reading!

4. Read the story aloud to her.

As soon as the writer returned from visiting her neighboring village, her grandmother was waiting eagerly for her to read them the latest installment of Kashi Yatra – she couldn’t contain her curiosity to know what would come next in this story!

The writer sat down and began reading her grandmother a story. Her grandmother listened intently and soon memorized every line. Soon enough, she could recite it from memory as soon as the writer stopped reading it aloud. Soon enough, the grandmother found herself empathizing with an elderly character from the novel who gave up her trip to Kashi so a poor girl could marry the person of her choice; she also lamented not having been educated herself during childhood.

She realized the significance of learning to read. After years of being helpless and dependent, she wanted to gain independence by becoming self-reliant. So she promised herself she would start taking lessons the very next day; determined not to let age stop her from progressing her education.

As she read the story to her grandmother, the grandmother bent down and touched her feet as an indication of respect to their teacher – something the writer found strange as elders typically do not do with younger people. However, according to her grandmother, this gesture was meant as a mark of gratitude since this person taught her so affectionately and made her independent quickly; thus, they should be respected regardless of gender and age.

The next day, the grandmother began taking tuitions from the writer. Her level of homework impressed the latter: reading, repeating, writing, and reciting alphabets and Kannada words with great determination helped her accomplish her goal of reading an entire novel by her own decision. Her grandmother taught her that education is vitally important and should not be wasted.
